Organisation
The environmental management role is a complex one. Only optimum harmonisation of organisation, communications and coordination can ensure that environmental responsibilities are transparent and clearly understood, internally and externally.
Munich Re has divided up its organisational responsibilities. The full Board of Management, represented by chairman Dr. Nikolaus von Bomhard, bears overall responsibility for strategy and measures within the reinsurance group. It is here that strategic positioning on environmental and sustainable development is decided and environmental guidelines adopted. The full Board appoints a Board member with special responsibility for environmental issues who represents the Board in environmental matters and is responsible for ensuring that individual environmental targets are in line with overall corporate strategy.
The Environmental Officer coordinates the environmental protection and sustainable development image we present to the various target groups and is Munich Re’s representative on international committees as well as in the public arena. The Enviromental Officer regularly reports recent developments and the impact of the environmental management system to the Board.
The operational and central divisions lay down environmental targets and measures relevant to their respective areas of responsibility and guarantee implementation thereof. They are also responsible for overseeing compliance with the relevant statutory requirements and administrative regulations.
Environmental management is responsible for organising, implementing and enhancing the environmental management system. It helps the Board of Management, operational and central divisions to ensure that environmental protection goals and sustainable development targets are met. Environmental management promotes open dialogue with employees and external target groups and tracks fulfilment of the objectives.
Its main functions are to ensure that the environmental guidelines adopted by the Board of Management are systematically embodied and applied in the operative processes.
ERGO has also divided up its environmental management responsibilities. It set up a central office in 2005 to coordinate and enhance its environmental activities and communications and thus derive maximum impact and benefit from its environmental management system. Both the ERGO Group and Victoria have appointed a Board member with special responsibility for environmental issues who, together with the Environmental Coordinator, ensures that targets are met.
