The air at the top is still thin for women – at the moment
The Munich Re Group has many qualified, committed and motivated women on its staff. For this reason, we are an equal opportunities employer and have no interest in discriminating against women in personnel decisions.
Distinctions based on sex or origin are never made in our consideration of the professional opportunities and risks of our staff at any of the companies in the Group.
The sky's the limit
In principle, career advancement is open to all members of staff, and everyone has the opportunity to be promoted to a managerial position with greater responsibility.
Although women account for 47% of all our staff, they are still underrepresented at managerial level and in senior positions. In spite of all our efforts in recent years, women only occupied 18% of our managerial positions in 2006. The situation at ERGO Germany is very similar. 51% of the staff are female, but they likewise occupy only 18% of the managerial positions.
Joint project with the Ludwig Maximilian University
However, we have good reasons to assume that the positive development will continue in the years to come. In order to get to the bottom of the imbalance between men and women in management positions, Munich Re is carrying out a large-scale research programme launched in 2000 in conjunction with the Institute of Sociology at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. Its brief is to investigate professional careers at Munich Re over a period of several years. On the basis of empirical investigations, the study focuses on the identification and analysis of sensitive areas in the career development of women in particular, the aim being to provide optimum support to our women staff with regard to their goals and wishes.
