It's anything but boring!

Underwriter, mathematician, economist, lawyer, IT expert – perhaps, on the face of it, other professions have a more exotic ring, but closer inspection reveals just how exciting, varied and responsible just such jobs are in the world of insurance.

It is well worth a second look at the role these occupations play in the Munich Re Group:

Underwriters deal with our core activity: reinsurance business – assessing risks and discussing and negotiating with clients.

Behind many of the activities performed by Munich Re and the insurance companies lies the expertise of mathematicians and statisticians.

Economists are employed in underwriting, control, accounting and human resources as well as in our economics department.

Whilst, traditionally, lawyers work in the legal department or human resources, Munich Re’s lawyers are also involved in claims and underwriting.

The expertise of our engineers is vital not only to our claims departments but also for assessing and writing individual risks.

Finally, nearly all units use the services of our IT experts.

Personal development planning in the Group companies

As a forward-looking and knowledge-based company, we invest significant amounts in maintaining and enhancing the expertise of our staff – on and off the job. A key component of our human resources development work is the holding of regular appraisal interviews at which objectives are agreed and performance assessed.

These are strategy discussions where managers and staff discuss objectives, development opportunities and teamwork. This is in the interests of staff development and helps us as a responsible employer to keep our finger on the pulse.
