Initial training
The initial training programme for newcomers to the field of insurance and finance has a long history in our Group, going back to 1949 on the reinsurance side and as far back as the 1920s in the case of Victoria. In 2006, 1,295 young people completed their training with us. It is a fact that any company wishing to draw the qualified professionals of tomorrow from within its own ranks has to assume responsibility for training them.
To ensure that training is as practical and hands-on as possible, trainees must be given an environment in which they can learn and work independently. Our trainees can experience the excitement of being involved in various projects that develop personal initiative. Trainees are given advice and support by their trainers and training supervisors in the operational and central divisions and learn the necessary skills by attending specialised seminars.
Objective: Investment in the future
Trainers and trainees agree on common objectives before each stage. The objectives are based on what is to follow once training has been completed. All Munich Re Group companies hope that as many of their trainees as possible will join the permanent staff, and in the case of Munich Re and ERGO, some 70% did precisely that in 2006.
Training takes three years for school-leavers who have completed the general certificate of secondary education and two for those who have passed the advanced level examinations. Whilst we are happy for trainees to join our permanent staff right away, we also offer them the possibility of completing a period of study, or perhaps work experience abroad, before they do so. We make every effort to ensure that qualified staff remain with Group companies in the long term, and encourage them to follow up the initial training with more advanced insurance qualifications. One important aspect of preparing for professional life that we support is development of the personality. Accordingly, Munich Re organises seminars on lifelong learning and stages a week-long programme at our Schliersee Country Guest House. This helps trainees to identify with Munich Re, become better acquainted with the work environment and what is required of staff, explore their own personalities, and communicate and cooperate with each other. It also provides an opportunity for them to hone their learning skills in relaxed surroundings.
