Only the best for the Munich Re Group

Identifying risks and seizing opportunities – that sums up in a nutshell the business of insurance and reinsurance. Not all members of that highly-coveted species – the university graduate – appreciate just how varied and challenging our work is. So that one of our key marketing tasks is to promote ourselves as an attractive, international employer.

In recent years, we have devised a number of new recruitment tools and updated existing ones. Today, we can make use of a broad international spectrum that includes traditional job and image adverts, the careers section on our website, presentations at universities, in-house events, and Munich Re stands at graduate fairs and recruitment workshops.

From lecture theatre to first-hand experience: Munich Re’s student programmes give some 120–140 students an opportunity to find out what goes on in the various departments.

Graduate trainees

As an alternative to direct entry, graduates can acquire professional expertise by joining our 18-month graduate trainee programme. Future underwriters are involved in project work, and there are numerous opportunities to gain international experience.

On-the-job training: Graduate trainees have a fixed base in one of our divisional units, where they learn how to put newly acquired reinsurance knowledge into practice. They can also make effective use of INTOP, our Intensive Training and Orientation Programme. This consists of seminars that teach our international graduates about reinsurance and methodology as well as a range of social skills. Seminars are conducted in English.

Interns and trainee lawyers

We offer internships in most areas of insurance and reinsurance. The majority of these are geared to students of mathematics, information technology, economics, law and engineering but there are also openings for law students wishing to undergo their mandatory practical training with us. There are around three such openings each year in the Group as a whole – in the areas of commercial law and fiscal law. Interns and trainee lawyers are paid for their work.

Under our "Fair Company Initiative", we – along with ERGO AG, Victoria and Hamburg-Mannheimer – are pledged to provide ideal conditions for students working for us. Fair companies do not deploy interns, volunteers or student employees in full-time posts, do not propose internships as alternatives to graduates seeking permanent employment or lure interns with vague promises of subsequent full-time work; fair employers offer internships primarily as a means of vocational guidance for people still in education, and pay interns a fair wage.

Diploma, BA, masters and PhD theses

All students who have already worked for us or completed an internship with us have the option of writing their final thesis or dissertation at Munich Re. In addition, Munich Re is also very open to taking on PhD students who are writing a thesis, and a number of scholarships are available.

Retaining student talent: Munich ReMember

Students of economics, mathematics, law, information technology and engineering who have demonstrated particular aptitude in the course of vocational training, an internship or a thesis project at Munich Re can apply to join this scheme. The Munich ReMember contact and support programme includes individual mentoring by former supervisors, access to the MunichReMember internet platform, priority consideration for (international) internships and much more.
