Culture counts

Promotion of art has a long tradition at Munich Re.

Our corporate culture stands for openness, savoir vivre and the conviction that future-oriented knowledge requires dialogue of a cross-social nature. The works of art in our office buildings make this philosophy visible and tangible.

One of Munich Re's most important contributions to living public culture has been its role as a building owner and as a patron of progressive, new architecture and art in construction. This contribution to the public culture is conspicuous, a part of the cityscape and the community.

The Main Building at Königinstrasse 107 in Munich, constructed in 1912/1913, was then an architectural sensation in the Bavarian capital.
Munich Re set a special accent in the forecourt of its office building in Leopoldstrasse in 1995 with the "Walking Man" by Jonathan Borofsky – a symbol of transition and progress, dynamism and ongoing change.

We also promote selected cultural projects. The sponsorship of the concert tours of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester is an example of this. The then conductor of the Vienna State Opera, Claudio Abbado, established the youth orchestra in 1986 and is still musical director today. In 2007 the GMJO was distinguished with the "European Orchestra Prize" of the European Cultural Foundation. In 2006, our commitment made it possible for the renowned youth orchestra to perform concerts in Madrid, Munich and Paris. In 2007 we promoted the Easter tour as well as the summer tour, which took the young artists to cultural centres like Paris, Madrid and Buenos Aires.

Munich Re is a member of the Premium Circle sponsor group of the Bavarian State Opera. With this we underscore our commitment to art. Our aim is to enhance the exchange between culture and industry, two fields that can be extraordinarily and mutually fruitful.

This also applies to the interaction of culture with other areas, health, for example. Here the DKV stands in the foreground. It is a committed partner of the renowned German Hygiene Museum (DHM) in Dresden. The DKV has served as an institutional sponsor and contact partner of the German Hygiene Museum (DHM) in Dresden since 1997.
