Assuming responsibility

Safeguard risks, indemnify claims and compensate for losses: the significance of the insurance industry goes far beyond the economic benefits.

The pooling of risks is a basic condition of modern societies that makes innovation, growth and social as well as personal prosperity attainable. For a relatively moderate price, the industry and individuals can protect themselves against risks that could not be shouldered by the individual. Particularly in times of diminishing public resources, the independent precautionary provision offered by insurances can provide personal freedom in all phases of life. Our social responsibility is thus already rooted in the fundamentals of our business. For over 125 years we have been creating value from risk for the company and society – worldwide.

The Munich Re Group adheres to the highest ethical standards in its business operations. In August 2007, in signing the Global Compact initiative, we added still another component to our value management. We thus make a commitment for all to see at an international level to ethical principles firmly anchored in our strategy, culture, and the daily business of our company.

But we do not stop there. Our understanding of social responsibility as defined in our guiding principles for sustainability also includes the active promotion of science and support of selected cultural as well as social projects at our business locations. The companies of the Munich Re Group are also committed in many ways, both large and small.
