Science
In our social commitment, we focus on our greatest strength – our knowledge.
Mathematics plays a leading role in this. We have been supporting the internet portal of the German Mathematicians Association (DMV) for more than three years now. The website communicates information and knowledge relating to mathematics, actively promoting this discipline of essence, not only to the insurance industry.
At our headquarters in Munich we are helping to establish the regional BenE centre of competence for education in sustainable development. Numerous Munich players such as the City of Munich itself, civil social networks and non-government organisations (NGOs), educational institutions, companies and economic associations pool their competences here. As a project of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005–2014), BenE München receives support from the United Nations University, which developed the concept of regional centres of competence. One of its pilot projects was the "Münchner Klimaherbst" (local climate project) at the Munich adult education centre. In this project, for one month, public focus was directed to the culture of saving energy and supplying energy largely from renewable sources.
Arousing a desire for knowledge and discovery is an important task which is as indispensable for the development of society as for successful companies. Since its foundation in 1922, the Munich University Society has been housed rent-free on Munich Re premises. This institution was set up to promote research and teaching at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich – in both social and physical sciences. It is the largest society of its kind in Germany. In addition to supporting this work in material form, we also have close personal ties.
DKV and the German Cochrane Centre in Freiburg promote application of evidence-based medicine (EBM) in everyday clinical life with the DKV Cochrane Prize of €10,000. The prize is awarded annually for outstanding work and studies on EBM by European scientists.
Worldwide cooperation
As an international organisation, Munich Re, is active in many international organisations and research associations and has established numerous research networks. Science and research have always been a global project which knows no borders, for which reason we support research and scientific institutions worldwide. Our Canadian subsidiary is the main sponsor of a new Chair of Insurance at the renowned University of Waterloo in Canada. Münchener Rück Italia supports talented graduates from the University of Bocconi in Milan by financing part of their postgraduate studies in the areas of insurance and risk management.
